I needed to purchase some garments yesterday. Being the cheapskate that I am, I went to the “irregular” section to try to save a little money. As I was looking through the bottoms, I was surprised to see “calf-length” bottoms for men. I’ve never seen these before. Is that a thing? Who would buy that?
I’ve purchased long sleeve tops and bottoms to the ankles as kind of a long-john thing to keep warm in the winter, but I think most prefer the knee length bottoms. Who buys calf-length and why?
I’ve heard that men wear capri-length pants in Europe, but I’ve never seen that in America. Would you buy these, male or female?
I’ve bought and worn them, and I like them. They don’t show (the line on your knee) through dress pants like the regular length do. They’re a little warmer, so they’re good for colder temperatures. They’re better than ankle length because there is no chance of them showing at the hem of an ankle length pant.
I’m a woman, and I’m in the U.S.
I (female) like to wear at least calf length pants/skirts even with knee length garments so I don’t have to fuss with the edges showing when I sit down, so I couldn’t imagine going to calf length garments unless I was going to wear full length pants all the time.
I have (girl) friends who wear calf-length with pants because they hate the line along the thigh. What strikes me as really weird, though, are the number of girls my age extolling the virtue of one-piece garments to avoid unsightly garment lines.
No
I wear calf length with trousers in winter if it is particularly cold. I’m short, just 5′ so they come quite long on me anyway.
MaryAnn “What strikes me as really weird, though, are the number of girls my age extolling the virtue of one-piece garments to avoid unsightly garment lines.”
I haven’t seen one-piece available here at all, the entire time I’ve been wearing garments, but from what I recall of my parents there are all manner of seams that would make unsightly lines in odd places, and I can’t imagine it’s easy to find any to fit short cuddly people like me…
I am hedgehog’s opposite- I’m a nearly 6 foot woman, and I find the calf length garments unbearable. I bought a couple pairs for winter wear and I hate them. There’s about 4 inches of lace at the bottom, meant to hit below the swell of the calf and keep them in place. But when your legs are as long as mine, that lace is well above the calf and it all bunches up in my knee pits. Itchy, horrid, all around unfortunate.
But I am glad they work for the shorter sisters…
I’d be willing to get a couple pairs if they were cheaper, but not more than that. There’s always going to be a day or two in a week (at the very least Sunday) that I’ll be wearing long pants.
Elizabeth St. Dunstan: They’ve discontinued the horrid lace addition in the last year. I’m 5’8″ and I only wear the 3/4 length under pants. The horrid lace addition has been scrapped. Hallelujah! I don’t know who it is in the design department that thinks adding lace and seams is a good idea. It is so itchy and unpleasant.
Are there any men who would buy this? Not me!
Oops! I misread the title and thought they came up with something really good: Calif. length Gs. For surfing maybe?
My mom loves them. No lines at the knee and they don’t hike up when she sits (I’ve found carinessa knee length stays put, but the cotton and cotton poly always need to be pulled back down and it’s a pain)
I want the men’s Gs to have lace at the seams and edges. Now that would be entertaining! (and likely create a permanent ban on all things lace…)
Angela – good to know! It’s clearly been a couple years since my failed experiment with them :).
I just purchased a several pairs of calf-length G’s for my new job and the new wardrobe of dress pants that goes with it, and I love ’em. I’ve started wearing them on the weekends under jeans as well, it’s so nice to lose that thigh line. Granted, I live in northern Canada and I’m short and pudgy, so I’m sure that has some bearing.
In terms of the lace thing, the drisilque bottom has no lace anywhere, and the carinessa bottom (which otherwise would have been perfect) has a 3 inch wide lace band at the bottom that just ruins them . They’re constantly riding up to the knee and drive me batty.
After ordering them online I got an email requesting feedback on what I thought about my new purchase and there was definitely some grumbling about the malfunctioning lace band.
