This week I went to a family history center and learned that you can print your own cards for the temple now! It used to be that you printed a list of individuals needing temple work to the temple, and then the temple printed cards (blue for men, pink for women, off-white for sealings.) However, you can now print these cards from home on regular white paper and take them to the temple. (I even did it today!) However, familysearch does not allow you to print cards from Firefox or Microsoft Edge (the new browser with Windows 10.0.) I’m not sure about other browsers, but it seems to prefer Google Chrome.
Do you think this is a paper saving ($$$) move? Are you excited to print your own cards? Is this just another improvement in efficiency?
Can a person still use the old process?
Yes. I just posted an additional photo above to show you have the option to do either.
I see no down side to this. It saves paper, but also allows you to get to your temple session faster if you get stuck in traffic (which in DC is every time).
They have been training us temple workers about this new capability for weeks now. It is being promoted as a convenience to the members. It started this week, and so far the only issue there has been is when the card is printed with a low quality printer the bar codes are difficult to read, making recording of the ordinances difficult.
Saves money on the colored cardstock (one of my friends told me she gets reprimanded by temple workers anytime she wastes an entire sheet of cardstock on just one card). Also, eliminates a step which saves everyone time.
They are rolling this out stake by stake. While you can technically take the home printed cards to any temple, they’d prefer to have you take it to your home temple till it’s universal. Starting with English, but they’ll add on the other languages eventually:

Do they prefer that we print them on colored paper?
White paper is fine.
