So, that’s organic mayonnaise (courtesy of tesco) on my sandwich, which is very nice. I don’t actually like Hellmann’s.
Had that been a British debate it would have been mayonnaise v. salad cream. One of my brothers was very fond of the latter, and had to have it posted to him whilst serving a US mission.
As to chocolate, I like swiss milk chocolate. The rest of the family prefer dark (70%+ cocoa).
I’m only allowed one condiment on my sandwich?
Mayo and mustard, thanks.
White chocolate isn’t even food.
I like them all and can’t tell the difference between mayo and miracle whip.
The only food I am picky about is sandwiches. I had to select ‘other’ since I only like 1) toasted (not grilled) cheese and 2) peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. Anything else I take a part and eat like a very little salad with bread and cheese. I guess it has been this way since I was a toddler. As for chocolate? Well, you know: chocolate.
This poll brought to mind a sister companionship from the mission time. The two sisters had nothing in common. Tall, short. Neat, sloppy. Light hair, dark hair. Feminist, most emphatically not a feminist. Utah, East Coast. There was one thing they did have in common however, peanut butter. One liked it smooth, the other crunchy.
They still managed to not kill, er…, love each other.
Fascinating how many people like dark chocolate!
I’m surprised by the dark chocolate too as I’m generally alone in refusing the milk choccy, sometimes I eat the two together. Yummy.
I used to make the mayo myself, but then just stopped being able to, it curdled every time-waste of eggs and oil. Now it’s any good mayo made with eggs.
Hedgehog, my wife tells me that Hellmanns in the UK tastes different than the US version. She says: “I like the taste of US Hellmanns better – it’s thicker and richer. In fact I have to admit I don’t like UK mayonnaise that much because I find it sweeter (more sugary), less creamy and more artificial tasting (no offense!) I wouldn’t even compare salad cream to mayonnaise as it seems to be a different product – perhaps more similar to miracle whip.”
Nate, it wouldn’t surprise me. The organic mayonnaise is all real ingredients (including eggs hwc), and has a lovely rich taste. I gather that salad cream was the wartime response to the shortage of ingredients required for mayonnaise c.1914. It certainly isn’t as rich, is much more tangy and more liquid.
I also gather US chocolate is also very different, as I’ve known many of Brits who’ve moved to the US who want chocolate sent over to them.
For such an important weekend, having a discussion of American food seems quintessential American. Freedom Fries forever!
Yes, we like UK chocolate much better! US chocolate is waxier and not as milky and creamy. We love the M&Ms here in the UK and guess where they’re made? France! No wonder they are so good.
Glad to see a few others who do not like chocolate. Maybe this is the root of my dislike of mother’s day at church?
We usually have Hellman’s at home, but I prefer Duke’s or homemade. Miracle Whip is gross yankee food.
I like all kinds of chocolate–serving a mission in Germany pretty much ruined the American grocery-store checkout kind for me (Hershey’s is particularly bad) but there’s plenty of other good chocolate options on the fancy candy aisles.
I grew up outside of Hershey, and even so I do not like milk chocolate one bit, although the aroma from the nearby M&M Mars factory was heavenly.
