I’m guessing that with the varying ages of people here, this could end up being quite interesting. But, in a way, that’s the entire point.
But there’s been this thing going around on Facebook…the concept is simple: change your Facebook profile picture to a picture that shows a cartoon you really liked when you were a kid.
The creators of this “movement” actually had a deeper purpose to it, but for all intents and purposes, I think it’s just an excuse to reminisce.
So…you should know what’s coming already.
What cartoon would you pick?
Obviously, it’s tough to pick just one. It was tough to pick for me too…I can’t really narrow it down to one without pointing out the great other options…but I guess…if I had to pick one, it would have to be…
DuckTales.
Honorable Mentions?
- He-Man (and She-Ra!)
- ThunderCats
- Ninja Robots
- The Animaniacs
- Doug
OK, OK, now for *yours*.

I’m surprised how similar our lists are. I’d probably have a different order though, and instead of including Ninja Robots and Doug, I’d have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Catillac Cats / Heathcliff.
Superfriends! Unfortunately I am too old to be interested in Facebook and don’t have an account. Shape of an old bucket! Form of water to pour on Facebook!
I just can’t imagine how this could possibly help their “deeper purpose.”
I’d choose Mighty Mouse, the first cartoon hero I remember loving. (Of course that dates me terribly.)
I don’t do Facebook either, but this cartoon idea is amusing. 🙂
I never heard of ninja robots until now.
Time keeps on passing, into the future.
Since many don’t seem to have facebook here, here are some sections from the above link:
“At least 2 of my friends had the following facebook statuses (statae?) on November 16th:
“Change your profile picture from 14th November until 17th Nov to your favorite cartoon figure and tell your friends to do the same:) The aim: no human faces on facebook, only our good childhood memories until Wednesday! 🙂 Because being a kid is awesome! :D” – Nov 16 2010
Now I’m seeing several variations of these:
“Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until Monday there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of wonderful childhood memories. This is in protest of violence against children. Give your support and show some love. Pass it on. :)” – Dec 2 2010
“Change your Facebook default picture to a cartoon from ur childhood. The goal? To not see a human face on Facebook until Monday, the 6th of December. Join the fight against child abuse and invite your friends to do the same!” – Dec 3 2010
So it’s pretty clear that it started out just so people could see cartoons. How much “awareness” and “support” are victims of child abuse getting from this?”
I’m also wondering if the attachment of some “cause” was necessary in making it go viral.
Okay, Scooby Doo, the original series, The Flinstones, Casper the Friendly Ghost, are a few of mine
GI Joe and Transformers…sweet Saturday morning memories.
Larrin, exactly. My brother got into a heated discussion regarding it (since he is personally involved in other efforts to help child abuse victims).
Geoffsn, I suspected that originally it was just for fun, but it’s interesting to see concrete proof of the evolution from fun to slacktivism.
I have the Far Side lady–you know, cat-eye glasses, beehive hairdo.
Not a Saturday cartoon, but a cartoon I loved, nonetheless. Now, I guess I should also go look for Opus from Bloom County.
I forgot to say, that I also love The Tasmanian Devil. I think he’s my alter ego.
TMNT
Thundercats
Voltron
I am really bummed that my kids don’t know the flintstones, yogi and boo-boo, or huckleberry hound. but with the new yogi and boo-boo movie, maybe I can help change that.
Speed Buggy
You are all so young. 🙂
I would choose Betty Boop. “Boop-Boop-a-Doop.” What a gal!
re 13,
mh, That’s really tragic. Even though they weren’t anything new and exciting, I definitely remember watching the Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and all the other Hanna-Barbera stuff.
re 15,
Kalola, not going to deny that I’m young, but I actually do remember watching some Betty Boop. Another oldie but goodie for me was Felix the Cat — always liked Felix more than Mickey, although Mickey definitely won out in the end
Robotech
Fillmore!
I’m with Bruce on this one — Robotech was just about my favorite cartoon from childhood.
I’ve tried to think of my favorite, but the only cartoons I remember seeing as a child were shown before the main feature at the movie theatre. My favorite of those would have to be Mickey and Minnie, with Betty Boop and the Roadrunner next on the list.
those are all great choices
I would also rank Duck Tales number one, after that…
2. TMNT
3. Transformers
4. GI Joe
5. ThunderCats
6. He Man and the Masters of the Universe
7. Gem and the Holograms
8. X-men
9. Speed Racer
10. Voltron
11. Darkwing Duck
12. Tailspin
13. Animaniacs
14. Simpsons
15. Captain N
16. Dragon Ball Z
17. The Snorks
18. The Smurfs
19. Pokemon (yes I was like 18 when I first started watching this
20. Doug
Hmm, I’m sure there’s way more I’m missing, also the order here is subject to change depending on my mood, except maybe the top ten.
I had a few fav’sand yes, they do date me! In no particular order:
1. Top Cat
2. Yogi Bear
3. Felix the Cat
4. Gigantor
5. Batman
For purposes of wanting to choose something relatively obscure and therefore give away to some extent how old I am, I considered switching to either “Crusader Rabbit” or “Clutch Cargo”.
Robotech.
Best cartoon ever.
I guess I appreciated G.I. Joe and their fight against Cobra (communism) or any of the super hero types (an allegory for God, basically) but I think the Smurfs played out the good vs. evil scene the best though.
For me it was Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, and Doug. I even drug my older sister with me to see the Doug Movie in the theaters. We were only two people there.
ThunderCats – HO!
He-Man, TMNT, Power Rangers. Those were my favorites.
Yew younguns wouldn’t know good animation if it jumped up and bit ya in the petooty!
My “Fave Five” (not an easy list)
1. Any Popeye, but especially the ones immediately after WWII.
2. Bugs Bunny. Nuff said.
3. Jonny Quest. Dr. Benton Quest was a COOL Dad, Race kiced a#@, and Jonny was a good kid BEFORE he defiled Dean Wormer’s wife some fourteen years later (look it up on imdb.com under Tim Matheson)
4. Wacky Races – had my first crush on Penelope Pitstop.
5. Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (1976 version by Filmation). A surprisingly thorough rendition that didn’t insult audience intelligence.
