This isn’t communist Russia . . . or should it be?

The biggest reason to outlaw religious dress is if it causes oppression of those who do not wear it. It is perfectly fine if, for example, Muslim women wear a Burqa if they want to. They should be able to do so pretty much everywhere, unless public safety is compromised (like they need to see all around them driving a car).
If the male Muslims begin to persecute women who do not veil or wear a Burqa, then the local, state, or national government should institute a ban on this clothing. If done locally, the root cause of the problem can be targeted directly. The men who are with a women wearing a Burqa should be fined, jailed, etc. If a nearby locality does not do this, the message may be perceived that proper behavior in public leads to more freedom and fewer restrictions.
el oso,
Or governments could fine men that persecute women who dress themselves…
In all honesty, I just don’t understand it. Yes there are basic public decency laws everywhere, but to go as far as to say the cut and style of clothing I just can’t see how regulating that would somehow solve all the problems of being in a society that would need it in the first place.
Amen to NewlyHousewife. Banning religious clothing is wrong. Just plain wrong. Quebec recently tried and failed. Banning religious clothing would include that worn under street clothes as well as that worn over or as street clothing. A person’s agency is sacrosanct. I am deeply disturbed by those who punish others who don’t wear religious clothing but respect the right of a person to choose to wear such clothing.
If the male Muslims begin to persecute women who do not veil or wear a Burqa, then the local, state, or national government should institute a ban on this clothing.
Let’s rephrase this and see if it still makes sense.
If the men on the street begin to catcall and whistle at women who wear short skirts or crop tops, then the local, state, or national government should institute a ban on this clothing.
If the male Mormons begin to lust after women who do not cover their shoulders and knees, then the local stake should institute a ban on this clothing.
See where you’re headed with this, el oso (#1)? There’s time to retract; I’m sure you just hadn’t thought it through clearly, you victim-blamer you. 😉
