We’re continuing our interviews with an expanded view of the September Six. In Sept 1993, 6 intellectuals were excommunicated or disfellowshipped from the LDS Church for writing and speaking about things the LDS Church apostles disagreed with. These include Lynne Whitesides, Maxine Hanks, Paul Toscano, Avraham Gileadi, Michael Quinn, and Lavinia Anderson. While Janice Allred wasn’t excommunicated in 1993, she had a bird’s eye view of the controversy. Both she and her sister Margaret Toscano received warnings from their bishops as Margaret’s husband Paul was excommunicated. Janice will share her memories of that important month in Mormon history. In a new book out by Signature Books, a non-Mormon author argues that Janet Allred & Margaret Toscano should be included even though it breaks the alliteration.

I was surprised to learn that Janice Allred still attends the LDS Church each week, despite being excommunicated for almost 30 years. Why? She’ll answer that and also describe what put her back on LDS Leader’s radar. She took on a General Conference talk by Gordon B. Hinckley!

Are you familiar with Janice Allred and her writings? Janice states that while Church leaders weren’t fond of her ideas about Heavenly Mother, they were more concerned that her writings combining Jesus with God were more alarming as they broke against orthodoxy. Even though she wasn’t excommunicated until 1995 (and Margaret in 2000), do you agree they should be included among the September Six? What do you think of her 30 years of church attendance as an excommunicant?
