I’m excited to introduce Jonathan Neville. He is an expert on the Heartland geography theory of the Book of Mormon. In this first episode, we’ll get acquainted with him and find out that he was originally a proponent of the Mesoamerican geography theory.
GT: Well, weren’t you originally a meso guy? Didn’t you tell me that? You were all on board with meso, and then you switched? Tell us about that.

Jonathan: when I was at BYU, I took classes in Book of Mormon, of course. I had a class from John Sorensen. I had a real fascination with all of the Central American stuff.
GT: And John Sorensen is the Dean of Meso, right?
Jonathan: Right. He wrote the book, Mormons Codex, which is kind of his final book, a big thick book, all about the Mesoamerican ideas. I visited Central America in subsequent years in many areas, and so I was all in. I used to go to the FARMS conferences. I’ve read all the FARMS stuff. I have all the BYU Studies all the way back from the 80s and so on.

Jonathan: Part of it was, I guess, being deferential to my professors. Because all of the BYU professors taught the Mesoamerican stuff back then. I’d read all the books. I used to see I have a huge collection of everybody who’s published anything on Mesoamerica. It wasn’t until I met Rod–actually, I saw a presentation by Wayne May, before I met Rod. I thought, “Wow, I’ve never heard of this stuff before.” But I was kind of skeptical, because he threw a lot of stuff on the wall some of it sticks and some doesn’t.
GT: Wayne May you’re talking about.
Jonathan: Wayne May. Since then I’ve gotten to know him really well and appreciate much more of what he’s been doing. But, at the time, it was just one of those things, a gospel tangent, you could say. But, when I met Rod, it was a little different, because he said, “If you really want to understand this stuff, you should come on a tour.” I thought, “Well, I’ve been to all seven continents, I’ve been all over the world on various activities for work or for pleasure or education.” I thought, “I’ve never been to Ohio really. I’ve driven through it.” So, I went on his tour.
GT : On Rod’s tour.
Jonathan: On Rod’s tour. Rod and Wayne were there. It just totally blew my mind, really. I just had never even conceived of the Book of Mormon in that setting before. But we went to the museums. I saw the artifacts. I saw the explanations and so on. So, I asked Rod, “Well, this seems so obvious. How did we ever end up in Central America?”

Jonathan: He said, “It’s because of these articles in the Times and Seasons in 1842.” I had been familiar with those, because they’re in the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. So, everybody assumed that Joseph wrote these articles. That’s where I kind of put on my lawyer hat, so to speak, and said, “I want to analyze this like a case, and mystery,” you could even say. Who wrote these articles? So, I really delved into that. That was my first foray into church history in any detail. That’s why I came up with the Benjamin Winchester approach. My assumption is, based on the historical evidence, that Benjamin Winchester wrote those articles and was sending them out to Nauvoo for William Smith to publish in the Times and Seasons. That was kind of my first introduction to the whole apologetic thing, because I met with some of the apologists.
GT: What year was this, approximately?
Jonathan: I’m going to guess around—-what would it have been? 2016, 2015, something like that.
GT: Oh, so you’re a recent…
Jonathan: Yeah, it’s pretty recent. I mean, I was oblivious to the debates about the geography, really, because I just assumed Mesoamerica. I didn’t even know there was an alternative. I’d seen, once in a while someone mentioned a map around New York or something, but I’d never paid that much attention to it. Because it seemed to me that–I knew a lot of these scholars from when I had been at BYU and reading their materials in BYU Studies, and the Interpreter, all these magazines. I thought, “Well, these guys must know what they’re doing.” It just wasn’t on my radar, until I saw this alternative. When Rod showed me these things, and Wayne explained them to me and I started doing–you know, my attitude is trust, but verify, right? So, I heard Wayne and Rod and I thought, “Okay, that’s interesting, but I want to know for myself.” So, I started delving into it. But, the first thing was the Church History. So, I met with, I don’t necessarily need to name people, but I met with some of the well-known apologists and talked to them about this Benjamin Winchester idea. One of them, in particular, really fought me on this, and published some articles in the Interpreter and all that. I thought, “Well, what they didn’t know…”
GT: So, he didn’t think Benjamin Winchester wrote this.
Jonathan: Oh, no.
GT: Did he think they were Joseph or…
Jonathan: They thought it was Joseph Smith, because he had published an article based on Stylometry. he said, “Well, the only three people who could have done it is John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff and Joseph Smith,” when he did the Stylometry analysis.
Do you have an opinion on Winchester vs Phelps vs Joseph Smith as author of those articles?
Joseph Smith was listed as the editor of many newspapers in his day. Some people attribute things about Book of Mormon geography to him in these newspapers, but Jonathan Neville disputes the idea that Joseph Smith endorsed these geography claims.
Jonathan: [Joseph Smith] visited John Bernhisel and shortly thereafter Bernhisel bought these two books about Central America that he gave to Wilford Woodruff to give to Joseph Smith. Bernhisel and Joseph Smith had been corresponding because Bernhisel was buying property in Nauvoo. They’d written a few letters back and forth. So, when Woodruff took these Stevens and Catherwood books, two big thick volumes on his trip from New York to Nauvoo. Wilford Woodruff read these books. He wrote about them in his journal and said, “They’re fascinating,” and all this. It turns out Wilford Woodruff had an especial interest in history and geography. He had read other of Steven’s books when Stevens was traveling in the Middle East. So, naturally, he was interested in these books about Central America, as well.
Jonathan: So he [Woodruff] goes to Nauvoo. At some point, a thank you note was written from Joseph Smith to Bernhisel. Joseph Smith didn’t write it, but it thanked him for these books. It said something, words to the effect that, this is the most accurate history or something, referring to the Book of Mormon.
Jonathan: So, that led people to assume Joseph Smith had actually read the books, and was endorsing them as the history of the Book of Mormon. It was about eight months, almost a year later, when these articles appeared in the Times and Seasons, that quoted from the Catherwood books. So, ever since then, pretty well, since at least the 1850s or so, after Joseph died, people assumed he wrote those articles.
Jonathan: When I dug into this, I said, “Well, in the first place, the articles were anachronistic because they refer to ruins that post-dated a Book of Mormon times. So, the articles themselves were incorrect and we know that now. It was just speculation. So, I thought, “Would Joseph Smith really be that obviously wrong about the geography of the Book of Mormon? When I started looking at this history, where Winchester had been writing about it, and he’d written many other anonymous articles in the Times and Seasons, I thought, “Well, this is just kind of a continuation of a pattern.”

GT: I mean, that’s kind of what Bruce Van Orden says in Nauvoo, that Joseph Smith’s name was on everything, but he didn’t do anything.
Jonathan: That’s right. Bruce and I, actually it’s interesting, because I had published that book about the time Bruce and I were talking about all this. We were kind of negotiating with each other about how much was Winchester and how much was Phelps. But it was obvious that it wasn’t Joseph Smith and it wasn’t John Taylor. I found a thing that Wilford Woodruff wrote in the same time period, where he said, “Joseph’s is so busy, he hardly has time to sign his name to the things we prepare for him to sign,” because he was the mayor of Nauvoo, and all these other things. When I saw that, I thought, “Well, how is he going to be sitting around writing these long articles about Stevens and Catherwood or editing them, or even approving them. So in my book, I pointed out there, I found a couple of instances where Joseph didn’t even know what was in the Times and Seasons until after it was published and he read it.
GT: And that had his name on it or something.
Jonathan: Yeah, his name, at the very end, after, in March, when he took over– what had happened is, in January, when they got rid of Winchester, they received a revelation. It’s not in the Doctrine & Covenants, but a revelation that the Quorum of the Twelve should take charge of the Times and Seasons. That’s when Joseph kind of did it. But William Smith was also a member of the Twelve. So, it made sense for him to be involved with it, as well as John Taylor and Wilford Woodruff. Let me make sure I have my train of thought right. So, when these articles came out in the Times and Seasons, Winchester had already had a history of linking the Book of Mormon to Central America, and being very proactive about that. Then, there’s a couple of articles in the Times and Seasons during this time period that came out of Boston, at the Boston Intelligencer. By comparing who was doing what and when, and all of that, I realized that was Winchester that was part of those articles as well. So, it turns out when I did my analysis, I had Winchester and or Phelps to some degree, but let me back up. This might be getting in the weeds too much for some people, but the Try the Spirits article, had this long discussion of kind of Christian history and so on. Then, it had some updates about what was happening in Nauvoo, which Winchester couldn’t have written because he was out in Philadelphia. So, that’s where I kind of saw the link between Winchester and Phelps, and/or Winchester and William Smith.
Jonathan: My thesis was that William Smith, having to fill two newspapers, was soliciting content, and he got a lot of it from Winchester. Winchester would send letters out there. We know Winchester was mailing letters to Nauvoo because I found another one that he wrote later that year to the leaders of the Church in Nauvoo. So, there was an act of correspondence. Then, when William Smith went out to publish the Prophet in New York, he solicited Winchester to come write articles for him, which was another indication he’d been doing it in Nauvoo. Anyway, I wrote this book, and the guys criticized it in The interpreter, and so on. I had to condense my material down to around 300 pages to have a published book, but I had hundreds of pages of other notes. They had made a couple of good points. So, I did a second edition of the Lost City of Zarahemla that addressed their objections. Then, I did two additional books with all my other research.
Jonathan: By now, I don’t think there are any historians who have looked into this, who still think Joseph Smith was editing the Times and Seasons. What had happened is…
GT: So, between you and Bruce Van Orden…
Jonathan: Yeah, and a few others who haven’t come out publicly.
GT: Okay.
Jonathan: But, seriously, the only explanation I’ve seen for believing that Joseph Smith was the editor was the boiler plate at the end of the newspaper. It said it.
GT: Although that’s pretty significant.
Jonathan: Yeah, right. Well, here’s the thing about the boilerplate. It said that Times and Seasons is printed and published and edited by Joseph Smith. No one thinks he was down there setting type or running the printing press, right? Even though it said it was printed by Joseph Smith. It’s the same with the editing. He was the nominal printer, but he was also the nominal editor. That makes tons of sense.
What do you think of Jonathan’s argument?
I find the following line from your piece very ironic: “….Joseph Smith’s name was on everything, but he didn’t do anything.” And why do I find that so ironic? Because in my view, we find the names Mormon and Abraham and Moses in our standard works but they were all written (not translated) by Joseph Smith. And then there’s the Doctrine and Covenants, which is said to include quotes from the Lord himself, which in my view are the words of JS to himself.
So pardon me if I grin a bit at the idea that JS’s name was everywhere but he didn’t actually do anything.
I’m quite sure that Joseph Smith and his followers believed that all Native Americans, throughout the Americas (both American continents) were descendants of Lehi and couldn’t have possibly been in the Americas before 6,000 years ago.
Heartland Model stuff is a whole ‘nother level of pseudoscholarship. So out-there that even the traditional apologists, the original pseudoscholars, dismiss it. But the heartlanders do borrow from the playbook of the traditional apologists in that they sneakily try to attribute authorship to some other person if any document is found that appears to be attributed to Joseph Smith that would deal an inconvenient blow to their theory. Theories, of course, that are first and foremost tied to things that Joseph Smith have said and had written, rather than what can be arrived at by independent analysis of evidence regarding the pre-Columbian Americas.
I issue a challenge to all Book of Mormon apologists, heartlanders and traditional apologists alike. If the Book of Mormon is such robust, incontrovertible evidence that Judaism and Christianity was practiced in the pre-Columbian Americas, contact journalists of the leading newspapers, history departments at the leading universities, museums, academic societies, whenever you can, and shout it from the rooftops about how there is evidence of pre-Columbian American Jews and Christians. Heck, evidence of Christians before Jesus. Let’s update the history textbooks. Let’s update how Naive Americans view their history.

The main “guy” who replied to Neville in Interpreter is, for those who think that “By proving contrarieties, truth is made manifest,” and would like to test the arguments directly, is Matt Roper. He published three detailed articles in Interpreter on the topic in 2015-2016, which he summarized in an abstract of the third essay “The first article shows that, contrary to Neville’s claims, Winchester was not a proponent of a Mesoamerican setting for the Book of Mormon, but rather a hemispheric one. Since this was a view commonly held by early Mormons, his ideas did not warrant any anonymity for their dissemination. The second article shows that, also contrary to Neville’s claims, Joseph Smith was not opposed to considering Central American geographic parallels to the Book of Mormon. The Prophet even seemed to find such possibilities interesting and supportive of the Book of Mormon. This third article shows that despite Neville’s circumstantial speculations, the historical and stylometric evidence is overwhelmingly against Winchester as the author of the Central America editorials.” For the that third article, Roper was aided by statisticians Paul Fields and Larry Bassist.
Among much else, Roper describes how John Bernhisel sent, Joseph Smith via Wilfred Woodruff, a copy of the recently published “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan.”
On November 16, 1841, Joseph Smith wrote back to Bernhisel, to thank him :
“I received your kind present by the hand of Er [Elder] Woodruff & feel myself under many obligations for this mark of your esteem & friendship which to me is the more interesting as it unfolds & developes many things that are of great importance to this generation & corresponds with & supports the testimony of the Book of Mormon; I have read the volumes with the greatest interest & pleasure & must say that of all histories that have been written pertaining to the antiquities of this country it is the most correct luminous & comprihensive.” (Quoted in Roper, Interpreter 16 (2015)
Personally, I’ve been impressed by Sorenson’s work, and have noted that work by Larry Poulson on Mesoamerican directions and the Grijalva as the best Sidon candidate improves it.

The Church needs to discourage all this silliness. A high councilman once tried to sell me on a BoM tour to Peru. After all, there are water pools at Machu Picchu and other Inca sites. There is also the Malay hypothesis. I did see a pyramid in nearby Cambodia. W&T should discourage these postings. Apologetics are mostly wasted energy. And there is so much of it around. The BoM is what it is.

John, while I allow people to give their spiel, I will also ask harder questions in future episodes. I hope you’ll tune into part 8 specifically. (I do use the term pseudoscience in part 8.) I do think maybe we should be careful about attributing statements in newspapers directly to Joseph. He may or may not have endorsed all the ideas.
Kevin, I appreciate the info. I’ll add some footnotes to the transcript and this is helpful information. However, it appears Roper is misquoting Neville. In my interview, Neville clearly stated that Winchester supported a hemispheric model.
Roger, as you should be well aware by now, I cover all sorts of “silliness”, including pro and anti-polygamy groups, groups with gold plates, etc. So you may want to sit out the next few weeks if this topic isn’t of interest. I know it interests many others. I’ll just add that my interview after Jonathan includes a prophetess and her husband, that endorses not only internet worship, but internet temple worship as well. (Haven’t the ex-Mos been asking for this?) My first segment is tentatively titled (with endorsement of the prophet), “Beliefs that Will Offend Everyone.”
I was an 8-year-old lad in 1968. A man in our ward with flowing white hair (often compared to Pres. McKay) had developed a map of Book of Mormon sites in South and Central America based on descriptions taken from the BOM. He showed my parents the map as I tagged along. (He was a tailor by day and my dad had engaged him to make a coat for mom.)
He claimed to have shown his map and research to “the brethren” in the church office building on several occasions. He said they confirmed the accuracy of his map but did not want to publish it because “the members were not yet ready for it”.
Just a few months ago, a former ward member (of adult BeenThere) passed at age 81. He was recognized for his demonstration that Babylonian and Egyptian cubits and geometry were used in buildings and layouts at a number of Mesoamerican sites.
The brother in the first case was a hobbyist. The second brother held two MA’s in relevant disciplines. Neither definitively proved the historicity of the BOM.
Once starting with the premise that the BOM is an actual account of peoples that lived in the Americas (north, central, south – oh my), one can squint real hard can find evidence that their, Meldrum, and Neville, et.al.’s research bolsters the truth claim. But none definitively proves it.
If the BOM is true, then I suppose it really doesn’t matter which one is right (and some will claim God is hiding the truth to try our faith). If it isn’t true, so much life force has been spent for naught, leaving a fool’s errand as a legacy. I don’t want to sound harsh, but it feels like ants battling over a crumb.
Believe the BOM or not. Decide it has value for your life or not. I don’t think proving its historicity matters much one way or another.
Rick B, okay, I understand, you want to be the National Enquirer of the bloggernacle. My point is: is this really needed at this point? Clearly, you have an audience. But is this a market that really needs a Mormon NE? Or, for that matter does any religion need a NE?

My point is, anyone is welcome to believe what they want to believe about the Book of Mormon. I just hope we can be respectful of those with whom we disagree, like Jonathan is respectful.
I think Joseph saw the BofM taking place in or near his immediate surroundings just as he saw Adam and Eve hanging out in Missouri, Jesus coming to Missouri (again right?) after he makes an apocalyptic pit stop in Jerusalem, the founding fathers in Ohio etc. IMO, the intertextual evidence in the BofM supports a N. American setting for the narrative, as Wayne and Rod like to point out. I could see Joseph getting on board with a South or Central setting as well, which he supposedly did after hearing about archeological finds in those areas. He did have a vivid imagination. I don’t know why the church/byu pushed the meso-model so hard for so long. Perhaps it made all the growth of the church in Latin America look even better, or maybe they just didn’t want people poking around with shovels all around Palmyra. Skeptics and exmos say BofM geography is silly. The church says it’s unimportant. They’re both probably right in a way. But is one is interested in how novel religious movements develop (hint: most founders of new religions place important spiritual events in their own backyard), BofM geography theories still deserve some attention – at least bemusedly and from a distance.
Roger Hansen: Is any of this “needed?” I’m sure we all have better things we could be doing. Frankly, I’m all for some controversy on W&T, as opposed to the typical progmo/exmo/nuanced-mo(?) echo-chamber, which is fun and stimulating to be sure, but probably not “needed” either. You could call him a provocateur, but Dave B seems to be the only one on this forum offering something resembling an opposing viewpoint – at least since John Charity Spring dropped his “get off my lawn” alter ego.
